NYSTRS has published its 2025 Stewardship Report, which emphasizes the Retirement Board’s commitment to skillful, prudent management and long-term stewardship of System assets. The report outlines how the System responsibly addresses risks and opportunities associated with climate and the energy transition as it relates to the investment portfolio.
“As fiduciaries, the NYSTRS Board must act solely for the benefit of its members and beneficiaries,” states the report’s executive summary. “This deliberate approach ensures we meet retirement obligations and sustain financial security for our members.”
The report highlights NYSTRS’ core Investment Beliefs. The Beliefs, developed by the Board, provide a consistent and transparent framework to guide NYSTRS’ investment decision-making processes.
These Beliefs reflect NYSTRS’ commitment to its Mission, Vision and Values, and its fiduciary responsibility to plan participants and beneficiaries. In the report, the Board underscores its fiduciary duty to promote responsible corporate governance and capital stewardship.
The Stewardship Report also focuses on the System’s strategies for navigating the energy transition and integrating climate risk into its investment decisions. This involves tracking climate-related key performance indicators (KPIs) for portfolio companies, engaging with corporate management, voting proxies, and seeking investments that mitigate long-term risks.
