1099-R Tax Statements Available in MyNYSTRS

01/12/2021

Your 1099-R tax statement for calendar year 2020 pension earnings is now available online in your secure MyNYSTRS account. Paper copies, if you elected that option, will be mailed later this month and will likely arrive in early February.

Your 1099-R tax statement, which you need to complete your 2020 income tax forms, shows your gross benefit amount, the taxable amount of your pension and any federal tax withheld.

If you have a MyNYSTRS account, you can access your statement on the My Retirement > 1099 Forms page. Tax statements from previous years are also available through MyNYSTRS. If you don’t have an account, we encourage you to create one by clicking on the MyNYSTRS button at the top of any page on this website.

We also encourage you to e-subscribe to receive a digital copy of your statement. Visit the My Account > E-Subscriptions page of your account to e-subscribe.

If you opted to receive a paper copy of your 1099-R, it will be mailed in late January. Please note that high volumes of mail being handled by the U.S. Postal Service this year could result in some delivery delays. Having a MyNYSTRS Account will allow you to access your statement online now.

If you do not receive your paper tax statement by early February, call us at (800) 348-7298, Ext. 6120. Questions about individual tax liabilities, however, should be directed to a certified tax professional or the IRS, not NYSTRS staff.

Your NYSTRS pension is not subject to New York state tax but is subject to federal tax. If you live outside New York state, the tax laws of your state apply.

If you need to change your tax withholding, you may do so online through MyNYSTRS by selecting Tools (found near the top of the page) and then selecting W-4P Withholding Election. Or you may submit a completed W-4P Withholding Election and Certificate (FIN-149) form found on this website under Forms > Retiree Forms. You can also request a form be mailed to you by calling our Hotline at (800) 782-0289.
