NYSTRS administers a defined benefit plan established by the New York State Legislature. Periodically, the Legislature enacts new laws that impact NYSTRS and/or the state’s other public retirement systems. NYSTRS administers the laws as enacted; the Retirement System has neither the ability to change the benefit structure nor the authority to mandate benefit changes.
Relevant legislation impacting NYSTRS and its members is summarized below. There was no significant legislation enacted in 2007, 2014 or 2015.
