NYSTRS Among Top-Ranked Plans

02/06/2014

Pensions & Investments, a highly respected trade publication, released its annual rankings of the top pension funds this week and NYSTRS was again among the top 10 of all funds.

NYSTRS was ranked number 10 among retirement funds and plan sponsors, both public and private, and is listed as the seventh largest public fund. The System also ranked as the seventh largest defined benefit plan. The rankings were based on total assets as of Sept. 30, 2013.

Also of note was NYSTRS’ ranking in terms of assets managed internally. The $59 billion in assets NYSTRS managed internally ranked fourth among all defined benefit plans. This is significant because internal management generally keeps administrative costs down, leaving more money for investing and paying benefits.

The cost to administer NYSTRS’ plan is approximately 25 cents per $100 managed. This compares favorably to the 60 cents or more it generally costs to manage $100 in a comparable defined contribution (e.g., 401(k)) plan.

For additional information on NYSTRS' finances, see the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013.
