New Pension Tier Created
Chapter 18 of the Laws of 2012 was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo today. The law amends portions of the Retirement and Social Security Law, Education Law and the Administrative Code of the City of New York that affect the contributions and benefits of members who join a New York State public retirement system on or after April 1, 2012. Tier 6 Does Not Affect Benefits of Current Members
A number of NYSTRS members, both active and retired, have expressed concerns that their pensions will be affected by Tier 6. Please rest assured these concerns are unfounded. (Read more)

Statistics Show Pensions Account for 3% of Government Spending
On average, pension costs for state and local governments are just shy of 3% of total spending, according to a February brief issued by the National Association of State Retirement Administrators (NASRA). The calculations are based on the most-recent data available from the U.S. Census Bureau. (Read more)

NYSTRS Posts 23.2% Investment Return
A robust total fund return of 23.2% net of fees for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011 was the largest rate of return posted in 25 years by NYSTRS. The figure was nearly double the previous year's return of 12.1%. (Read more)
